Kayaking in Glacier Bay

Sure, Alaska is a top cruise destination, and many do it every year. But, if you want to truly experience, connect with nature, explore hidden treasures, and head to locations the big ships can't go...UnCruise is your destiny.

The Un, in UnCruise to me, stands for several unique things that set this company above others, and in a category of their own. The ships are small and intimate. You feel at home and part of a family the minute you step on the ship. Unlike large cruise ships, UnCruise has small ships and are able to travel into hidden areas with special permits the other ships don't have. The ships are small and Uncrowded...and able to break away from the masses for the most Uncommon adventure you will experience.

I had the opportunity to experience Alaska - Whales, Wildlife, and Glaciers aboard the S.S. Legacy ship. The ship embarked from Sitka, Alaska, and disembarked in Juneau, Alaska. I arrived into Sitka a day early to explore the charming city. In Sitka, I had the best halibut I have ever had in my life, while watching 22 counted bald eagles soar around the pier where the restaurant was located. An Unreal sight!

The day we boarded the ship, we were welcomed by a friendly UnCruise crew member, and was escorted to our cabin. Within the hour we were down at the lounge sipping champagne with our shipmates. The ambiance is welcoming and casual. The crew will be calling you by your name by Day 2.

The ship offers an Unlimited variety of excursion options to choose from. You choose as much or as little activity as you prefer each day. Day 2 brought us to Baranoff Island, where I chose to kayak. Our small group kayaked so close to the beach we were able to sit and watch a mama bear and her 2 cubs frolic on the beach...an Unbelievable experience to be in that moment. That afternoon we chose to go out on the Skiff boat. We cruised around and saw more bears along the shoreline. UnCruise brings you closer to the magical surroundings of wildlife and the Untamed wild.

Day 3 we explored the Icy Straight. we chose a forest hike in the morning. Our experienced guide taught us about plants, animals, and geology. Their Unlimited knowledge about Alaska is impressive. The afternoon was spent on the Skiff boat getting up close to sea lions as they played and danced alongside our boat. That evening our entire table ordered the Crab for dinner, and we were not disappointed. The Executive Chef on board is amazing! All meals highlight flavors of all regions of Alaska.

Waking up the next morning in Glacier Bay National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage  Site, is the most Unforgettable sight I have ever seen. The glaciers are breathtaking. This was a day I knew I wanted to kayak! Kayaking up to the Glacier was the most Unexplainable feeling. It was peaceful and emotional to be up close to this beauty. It begins to sink in how special this place is and we truly are privileged visitors. As the ship began to sail that afternoon we bird watched, and discovered bald eagles, puffins, and black oyster catchers at South Marble Island. Mountain goats could be seen along the parks inland shores.

Day 5 in Chichagof Island we spent time at the bow of the ship whale watching. It's Unimaginable to see these marvelous creatures wave to you right aside your ship. Being on an UnCruise ship changes the way you see the world. You explore, try new things, and feel connected to earth, and yourself. By this point in our adventure, new friendships have been made, and we have shared cocktails and snacks with others during the daily happy hour and shared our own adventures of the day.

Humpbacks, Orcas, River Otters, and Salmon were seen throughout Lynn Canal on Day 6. This Canal was once a major route of Klondike gold rushers. We ventured out on the Skiff boat and passed more crab pots that I was Unable to count.

We arrived into the quaint town of Haines, Alaska on Day 7, and chose to river raft through the Chilkat Peninsula. Our guide shared historic stories about the tribes that settled in Haines. Bald eagles were spotted in trees all over as we rafted. We spent the afternoon site-seeing. The evening was spent enjoying our Farewell Dinner and watching a slide show that included highlights of the most Unbelievable week we all had.

We shared one last breakfast with our new friends we made throughout the week. We disembarked in the city of Juneau, Alaska. We walked around the city, shopped, and ate as we spent one last night in Alaska. I was Unaware of the fact that I would fall in love with Alaska. Her beauty, culture, wildlife, and Unlimited adventures are Unforgettable. I have memories that will last a lifetime and cannot wait for my next adventure to explore more.

I am proud to be a Certified UnCruise Adventurist and look forward to sharing my experiences with others.
