Dinner in Rome

I come from a big city, but I grew up in a small suburb.  We shopped small at our local hardware store, my mom worked at the ladies “dress shop”, the appliance store and furniture store owners watched us grow up, the grocery store was locally owned and everyone knew our name, my grandma even slung burgers at the local diner in her day. I could go on and on about small business.

When my family eventually purchased a travel agency in St Louis, it just made sense to continue that small local business model. What I’ve learned through travel is how enriching your journey is if you continue that shop local no matter where you go. Immersing yourself in a destination means shopping and dining local.

Some of my fondest memories throughout the world have been meeting bartenders and restaurant owners. Who doesn't love trying new recipes specific to the region with local food and herbs prepared by chefs at restaurants that have been family owned for generations, or sipping cocktails and wine poured by a resident bartenders who enjoys showing off their mixology skills with locally inspired ingredients.

I’ve also learned having the right people to help not only me, but my clients while they are in destination, is key. When we, as travel agents, “shop local and small” for our clients, we are choosing vendors right in destination which we have worked with for years. Ones who will take care of our clients when we can’t. One’s who live in the city our clients are exploring and who personally know each of the tour guides, restaurant owners, and hotels they recommend. This gives us the chance to provide our clients the opportunity to truly “live like a local” for a few days during their journey.

I can still smell the strong espresso coffee being served at a café in Paris, the focaccia baking in a tiny shop in Italy, the grapes at a vineyard in New Zealand. I can still remember the local tour guides telling us about their families, where they live, what they do. These are the true memories we seek when we travel.  We want to explore, touch, and taste maybe as much as we want to see the world.

My heart has always been in the small, locally owned businesses in and around St. Louis, and I am lucky to be able to say also around the globe.
