Downtown Panama City, Panama

If you looking for destination to travel to that includes a vibrant downtown, a colonial village, a beautiful resort area, and an engineering marvel, I found just the place when I visited Panama City, Panama.  I loved it so much I've already visited twice within a year.

When you see downtown Panama City, you will be so surprised that their downtown rivals the Chicago skyline.  I was shocked to see skyscrapers, casinos, top chain hotels with ocean views, high end shopping, and a vibrant food scene. My first glimpse was during a ride from the airport to my resort on the opposite side of the city. It drew me in, and we went back into town a few times to enjoy wonderful dinners ending with visits to the casino and nightclubs.

Just past the city, is the part of Panama that stole my heart, Casco Viejo. This area is their original colonial village and is experiencing a beautiful resurgence. Although the area had fallen to disrepair, recently it has gone through some beautiful rebuilding.  Anchored by amazing churches, the town reminds me of New Orleans architecture only with a Latin vibe.  You won't find chains, but you will find locally owned shops, galleries, restaurants, coffee shops and wine bars. Everything is walkable from boutique hotels. We stayed in one of the top hotels in Casco Viejo.  My window had a view of an amazing church with bells that chimed us awake each morning.  The hotel had a swimming pool on an upper floor where we could catch some sun and see the city below us hustling and bustling.  We visited the fish market where you can grab a fresh catch and have it cooked or turned into ceviche right in front of you.  We sat in courtyards and had many caipirinha, caprioska, and sangria.  The evening turns Casco Viejo into an entirely different vibe with tapas restaurants rooftop bars, and dining al fresco.

Beyond Casco Viejo you find the Bridge of Americas which is the perfect vantage point to see the ships arriving into the Panama Canal on one side, and the working canal on the other.  We took a morning tour of the canal where we learned so much about what went into the design and building and now the care of the canal. It is truly an engineering marvel and one everyone should see in person to appreciate.  It's crazy how those huge ships go through the canal with little clearance on either side.

One of the highlights of our trip was visiting a traditional Embera Indian village deep in the Panama rain forest. The tribesmen picked us up via canoe and took us to their village where the tribe entertained us with stories and music and prepared our lunch. When it ended, the village set up a market for us to shop from their handmade items. It was truly an amazing experience and an incredible way to see some of the less developed areas of Panama.

Each time I’ve visited Panama, I have stayed at a resort in the Playa Bonita area. Both were beautiful properties and had great service.  The beaches were fine with dark sand and a tide that came and went a few time throughout the day.  The temperature is hot in Panama, so a great pool was certainly a must.
